Collection presentation
In the rooms on the first and third floors, works from the holdings of the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel and the collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation are exhibited. The museum building was opened in 1980 for this purpose, among others. At that time it was called Museum für Gegenwartskunst, today it bears the name Kunstmuseum Basel │Gegenwart.
The collection works on display were created and acquired over the last four decades. Their grouping and division by rooms was done from a contemporary perspective. In their respective constellations, they evoke themes that shape contemporary social discussions in Basel and elsewhere: Vulnerability, Identity, Changing Perspectives, Digital Culture, Nature, and Global Contexts. With a view to future additions, a temporary space created together with the painter Vivian Suter was added to the collection presentation from loans.

We warmly invite you to the vernissage of "When We See Us. A Century of Black Figuration in Painting". Discover a multifaceted special exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart, where we present Black figurative painting from Africa and the African diaspora since the 1920s. The event will begin with welcoming remarks by the Director of the Kunstmuseum Basel, Elena Filipovic, the Government Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and the Executive Director & Chief Curator Koyo Kouoh and will end with a shared aperitif. Nakhane, «Endo-» – Performance
The well-known South African singer, songwriter, actress and writer is coming to Basel with the musical performance "Endo-", which was commissioned by the Kunstmuseum Basel especially for the exhibition "When We See Us. One Hundred Years of Pan-African Figurative Painting". Nakhane's work was praised by Elton John, who interviewed Nakhane, and also by Madonna, who called the multitalent one of her two favorite artists and said Nakhane's music influenced her.

In German. Die Ausstellung Geniale Frauen präsentiert rund 100 Werke von erfolgreichen Hofmalerinnen, Lehrenden, Unternehmerinnen und Verlegerinnen aus dem 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert und beleuchtet so diese drei Jahrhunderte aus einem neuen Blickwinkel. Wir werden 3-4 Werke genauer betrachten und mehr über die sozialen und familiären Hintergründe dieser Künstlerinnen erfahren. In this walkshop, we want to question and uncover these vital yet hidden aspects of the museum’s operation. The Unofficial Hiking Society AG invites you to a night tour around the museum to shed light not only on the façade but also on unofficial narratives of the institution.

What is the relationship between nature and culture around the Rhine? We will give form to our findings, reflections and impressions through paintings, drawings and frottages - outdoors if the weather is fine. Open to all. Participation free of charge.
