During Art Basel (June 12-18) we look forward to welcoming you every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Thursday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Here is an overview of all our exhibitions and events:
Andrea Büttner «Piano Destructions (2014/2023)»
4-channel video installation with live concert
Andrea Büttner’s «Piano Destructions» engages with a series of—predominantly male—artists since the 1960s who destroyed pianos as part of their creative praxis, including Nam June Paik, Ben Vautier, and Raphael Ortiz. The gesture of destruction is rooted in the experimental music and performance of the Fluxus movement; in the films, it is carried out in a variety of ways—pianos are set on fire and dropped from heights, broken to pieces and shattered with hammers.
In Büttner’s performance, nine female pianists respond to these acts of destruction playing on nine grand pianos. They play works by Romantic composers like Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849), Robert Schumann (1810–1856), and Fanny Hensel (1805–1847), followed by transcriptions for piano of two choral works by the Renaissance composer Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643).

This year’s Art Parcours will showcase 26 site-specific public art installations around the Münsterplatz and Basel’s city center – two of which at Kunstmuseum Basel.
Julian Charrière’s «Controlled Burn (2022)», a new drone film taking viewers on a cosmic voyage through a landscape of pyrotechnics, coal mines, oil rigs, and rusting powerplants, is on view at the Vortragssaal of Kunstmuseum Basel | Hauptbau.
«Shhh!», Luís Lázaro Matos’ intervention at the Kunstmuseum Basel’s library subverts the austerity of the public site as a dwelling of knowledge. The work consists of a series of paintings that depict mythical hybrids of half human and half goat; the currency of desire animating these therianthropic entities is governed by the fetish of exhibitionism, as well as the consumption and destruction of knowledge.
